Four Walls and A Thousand Lessons

Academics was the least of the things I learned in school.

In a million timelines, I never envisioned the life I now live as one I would experience within the four walls of this institution. I thought the idea of going to the university was simply to get an education, but I was wrong. I was schooled in ways that were never taught in the pages of a book.

Academics was the least of the things I learned in school. I wasn’t aware of the level of freedom that comes with being an undergraduate and how every decision, whether good or bad, carries a consequence. Later on, I had enough freedom, yet I felt trapped. Trapped in a body that was forced to serve and not question authority. Trapped in a mindset that opened a passage, yet kept me bound.

The early days of the man I used to be were scary. Honestly, I wouldn’t wish them on my enemy. I fought silent battles while keeping a smile on my face. I fought enemies I had to applaud every single time. Looking back now, those moments seem distant, but at the time, they felt endless.

Then everything changed after my internship.

I found myself.

I found purpose.

I found people.

I found love.

Somewhere along the line, the version of me I had known for years, the one that was once lost, began to find his way back home. The confusion gave way to clarity. The fear slowly made room for confidence. What once felt like a place I was merely passing through gradually became a place that shaped me.

And maybe that is why this ending feels so strange.

For years, this has been my reality. These halls, these people, these experiences, the victories and disappointments, the lessons and the mistakes, have all become woven into the fabric of who I am. I spent so much time trying to survive this chapter that I never imagined I would one day have to say goodbye to it.

Now, as the last pages slowly turn, I find myself thinking about the vacuum that will be created by the absence of this place. Not because it was perfect, but because it became familiar. Because it became home in ways I never expected.

I suppose that is what the beginning of the end feels like. It feels like gratitude and uncertainty existing in the same breath. It feels like standing at the edge of a chapter that shaped you, knowing you cannot stay, yet not fully knowing what comes next.

But I guess I’ll have it all figured out with time, because some things are beyond our control. For now, all I can do is appreciate the life I found here, even as it quietly comes to an end.
